Once regarded merely as the Head of the Financial Institution’s Legal department and (in some cases) the “company policeperson”, the corporate counsel in banking is now seen as an integral part of the leadership and senior management team. General Counsel and other legal leaders in banking are proactive in providing guidance on commercial and ethical issues to the C-suite and the Board, identifying and addressing issues before they escalate. More than ever, legal leaders must have a deep understanding of the bank’s breadth of activities in order to manage and mitigate the spectrum of legal, commercial, ethical, governance and compliance issues which may arise.
